are there other barriers I’m not seeing?
Hey folks, I was thinking about why there aren’t many mid-sized multiplayer games these days. Back when I played a few indie MMOs in college, the communities felt tight and really fun, but now it seems like everything is either massive AAA online worlds or tiny mobile games. I feel like with modern internet speeds and better servers, it should be easier to bring back games that support 20-50 players in one session. Does anyone else think tech could actually make these kinds of games viable again

I totally get what you’re saying. I’ve been trying to get a small group of friends into something new, and we kept running into the problem that there isn’t much available that isn’t huge or hyper-mobile. I think infrastructure-wise, we could totally handle mid-sized games now, especially with cloud servers and better matchmaking. I actually read an article about this the other day that laid out some reasons developers aren’t making them. It’s mostly about market pressures and how the economy favors either tiny casual games or massive live-service ones.
