Reading List

In January, each student will receive over 700 pages of notes and hand-outs from Whapio.  These handouts will be divided into 7 sections and will encompass:

Anatomy and Physiology
Prenatal Care
Labor and Birth
Postpartum and The Newborn
Homeopathy
Mediation & Counseling
Qigong, Acupressure and Sexual Wisdom

This will comprise the major reading material for the Immersion Program.

Whapio does recommend some of the major textbooks and books of interest about birth and pregnancy (
see below), but you are not required to purchase
these texts.  If you have them or wish to purchase them, by all means, do so.  They are excellent for additional reading and for comprehensive understanding
of some of our topics.  However, many of these texts are available to borrow or acquire over the course of the Immersion.

Required Books

*
Please do purchase Susun Weed's Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year
There is more relevant information in this book than any other book I know,
especially considering the price ($10
).

*
Birth Reborn by Michel Odent
It is absolutely required that you read this boo
k.

Recommended Books

TEXTS:

Holistic Midwifery, Volume I : Care During Pregnanc
y - Anne Frye
Holistic Midwifery, Volume II : Care During Labor and Birth
- Anne Frye
Understanding Diagnostic Tests in the Childbearing Year
- Anne Frye
These three texts by Anne Frye are comprehensive and offer a point of reference and teaching on
every subject in Prenatal Care, Birth and Immediate Postpartum, and Labwork and Testing.  They
are invaluable as reference works, especially
Understanding Diagnostic Tests.  I recommend having
them in your library.

Maternal-Newborn Nursing: A Family and Community Based Approac
h - Olds, London and Ladewig
This is a great text for newborn care.

Oxorn-Foote Human Labor and Birth -
Harry Oxorn
I have always liked this book.  It shows birth easily and simply.

Varney's Midwifery -
Helen Varney Burst
The American standard text for nurse midwives.  Clinical but informative, and the MANA exam will
have a lot of questions from this text.  If you have Frye's texts you have everything that Varney
teaches and more, except the pharmacology (which is usually not on the MANA exam).

Textbook for Midwives -
Margaret Myles
This is the British standard for midwifery.  The older editions are better than the newer ones.
Try to find this at a yard sale, secondhand bookstore, or online from a used bookseller.

Practical Skills Guide for Midwifery -
Pam Weaver and Sharon Evans
This is the standard skills book for midwifery practice.  If you do purchase this book, I will sign
you off on any skills you demonstrate.

OTHER BOOKS:

Heart and Hands -
Elizabeth Davis
This book is a classic and is excellent for your library.  Moms like it too as it gives insights into
midwifery care and how to co-create care with your provider.

Anything by Michel Odent, especially:
*
The Scientification of Love
* The Farmer and The Obstetrician
* The Cesarean

Remember that
Birth Reborn is required reading.

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birt
h - Henci Goer

Gentle Birth Choices -
Barbara Harper
These last two are great books for your library, and to inform you of current birthing practices.
Both are highly recommended.

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS

During our four months together, you will have access to numerous videos and
tape sets.  Most of the tape sets are from various midwifery conferences, and
offer you the opportunity to hear popular midwifery teachers speaking on all aspects of birth and childbearing.  We will also see approximately 70 births on video, and will discuss each of these in class.
