ABOUT OUR PARADIGM AND PHILOSOPHY

We believe that midwives should be well-educated, and that education is an ongoing process of knowledge, maturity and wisdom.  Our curriculum is designed to provide knowledge of the body and the soul.

The focus of this year-long study of midwifery and birth is an in-depth immersion into the paradigm of holistic midwifery and integral birth.  The education of a midwife necessitates the balance of the intuitive and the practical.  Our curriculum is dedicated to providing a blend of the academic and the spiritual.  We emphasize the transformative nature of childbearing, and we believe that birth is the domain of the family.  We strive to return birth to the family.

As women become more conscious of the transformative nature of childbearing and parenting, our birthing paradigm will shift.  This is already beginning to occur.  More and more families are reclaiming their birthing experience.  They are birthing under their own authority, and asking caregivers to understand and adjust.  Families are asking caregivers to recognize that birth is primarily a rite of passage, and to create their practice and service accordingly.  It is to these families and to the unfolding of this paradigm that we dedicate what is taught and received at The Matrona.

ACADEMICS

Classes will focus on:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the human body

    • Anatomy & physiology of the female body
    • Anatomy & physiology of pregnancy, birth and postpartum
    • Anatomy & physiology of the newborn

  • Childbirth from multiple points of view

    • Clinical perspective
    • Medical perspective
    • Humanistic perspective
    • Practical perspective

  • Holistic perspective of childbirth

  • Authentic co-creation of birthing experience

    • Family

    • Caregiver

  • Intuitive skills

We are on the cutting edge of this transformative shift in birth and midwifery.  Therefore, we offer a solid education in the intuitive skills that families in a transformative birthing paradigm expect midwives to possess.

OUR EXPECTATIONS OF YOU

We expect maturity in our students, not just knowledge.  We expect graduate midwives to be competent and confident, compassionate and caring.  Graduates of The Matrona will be able to be "with woman," rather than requiring women to be "with midwife."

What we offer is unique in the realms of birthing education.  Please join us.
